A 34-year-old Napili man was thrown from the Jeep Wrangler and died Monday night when he lost control of his vehicle on Maui’s Honoapiilani Highway.
The accident occurred at 10:08 p.m. when Adam Newkirk was driving north on Honoapiilani Highway near mile post marker 34.
Maui police said the vehicle left the roadway on the right shoulder and struck an embankment, veered back onto the roadway, crossing both lanes of travel and overturned on the makai shoulder.
Newkirk was ejected from his vehicle and sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene
A preliminary investigation revealed that Newkirk was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Speed, drugs, and alcohol are possible factors in the crash.
