After dismantling the No. 1 seed in Division II, Le Jardin continued its unprecedented run to the state championship with a 25-18, 23-25, 25-12, 25-15 win over fourth-seeded Farrington on Friday at Kaimuki High School.
Junior outside hitter Kassidy Naone hammered 19 kills and picked up 10 digs to lift the Bulldogs to their first state title game appearance in school history. Natalie Piper added another double-double for Le Jardin with 11 kills and 12 digs, while libero Taylor Souza recorded a match-high 26 digs.
"We just gotta keep going right? The last thing you want to do is come out flat," Bulldogs coach Lee Lamb said. "Since the tournament started we really kind of struggled in the beginning, so it’s like jitters, first time, big matches, but once we settled in we’re good."
Set 1 was a toss-up between the ILH and OIA teams with 10 ties and nine lead changes. The Bulldogs pulled away at 17-17 with a 7-0 run behind Nina Krupa’s aggressive jump floats.
Naone’s eighth kill ended the set.
The Governors jumped to an early lead in Set 2 on left-handed middle Molimau Heimuli’s kill-block-kill combo on her reverse slide. Le Jardin rallied to tie it at 8, but committed four consecutive hitting errors to lose the momentum.
With Farrington leading by as many as six points, sophomore Julia Fisher lit a fire under the Bulldogs. The team captain hammered three kills from the right side to go along with two blocks as Le Jardin crept within one at 24-23. The Governors refused to lose the lead or the set as Heimuli hammered a shot off Souza, who made a remarkable dig that slipped through the hands of Fisher on set point.
With the match tied at one set apiece, Le Jardin rocked the Governors in Set 3 and rolled into Set 4 on a 4-0 run. Farrington outside hitter Dayna Kahanu strung together back-to-back kills and served an ace to tie the match at 7, but the Bulldogs combination of Naone and Piper was relentless. With their heavy arms on the outside, Le Jardin’s Halle Hetzler served 11 straight points to take a 17-9 lead, and all but squashed any hopes of a Farrington comeback.
Naone’s 60th swing of the match drew a net violation to end the match and grant the Bulldogs a spot in the state championship against ILH champion Hawaii Baptist.
"First couple sets we struggled with the serving, but we settled down," Lamb said. "Taylor Souza did a great job tonight. Toward the end she was just starting to own the back part of the court and generate a lot of opportunities for us."
Hawaii Baptist 3, Seabury Hall 2
The Eagles overcame a 14-11 deficit in the fifth set to edge the Spartans 27-29, 25-20, 25-23, 19-25, 16-14 in the second Division II semifinal match at Kaimuki High School.
Junior outside hitter Keri Lum led Hawaii Baptist with 22 kills and 10 digs in the five-set victory. Seabury Hall’s Shayla Hoeft finished with a match-high 25 kills and 20 digs.
"We knew Seabury was going to be tough. They’re always tough," Hawaii Baptist coach Myles Shioji said.
Seabury Hall’s Bel Cagen and Hiilei Robinson stuffed an Eagles outside attack for match point at 14-11. Hawaii Baptist (12-3) overcame the three-point deficit with a kill by Lum and two Spartans hitting errors to tie the game at 14. Hawaii Baptist sophomore Kallie Langford pounded a kill off the Seabury Hall libero for match point and hammered the game-winning shot down the line to end the Spartans’ undefeated season at 13-1.
The Eagles will face ILH Division II runner-up Le Jardin in the title match tonight. HBA beat the Bulldogs both times this season by a slim margin.
"Those two matches were battles. We’re not taking them lightly for sure," Shioji said. "It’s going to be nervous for both teams. We haven’t been there in a while, this is their first time there. … I’m expecting a big battle tomorrow."
