In honor of St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day is Sunday, the Cathedral of St. Andrew and St. Mary’s Episcopal Church will hold pet blessings on different days in the coming week.
Francis is the patron saint of animals and the environment from the 12th-century Roman Catholic Church.
At the Cathedral of St. Andrew at 229 Queen Emma Square, dogs, cats, birds, lizards and other critters will be the guests of honor at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday, a news release said. Adults and students from St. Andrew’s Priory School for Girls and St. Andrew’s Preparatory School for Boys will bring their pets to the altar to be blessed by Episcopal priests and deacons.
Owners of pets that are too big to bring inside the church, or whose pets are deceased, can offer photos to be blessed. At the service’s conclusion everyone will sing an old Anglican hymn. Call 524-2822 for information.
On the front lawn of St. Mary’s in Moiliili, 2062 S. King St., blessings will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 10 by the Rev. David Blanchett. Assisting him will be his wife, Martha Blanchett of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, and the Rev. Dan Werning, director of the Hawaii Sacred Choir.
Each pet owner will receive a certificate with the pet’s name. Everyone will join in singing “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” followed by a short litany.
Refreshments will be served. Directions for parking will be available. Call 949-4655 for information.
