Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Pacific is inviting the public to celebrate its 50th anniversary Friday through Oct. 4.
“This vibrant community is the most ethnically diverse Orthodox church in the country,” the church said in a news release. “The priest, Father Alexander Leong, is Chinese; his wife, Nicole, is a Japanese immigrant, and the parish is equal parts Native Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Greek, and haole; part of the rich ethnic fabric of Hawaii. Theirs is the story of Greek immigrants coming to the island and establishing themselves amid many challenges.
“They ultimately became such a beloved part of the Oahu community that they show their love for their adopted home by putting on the Greek festival every year at Ala Moana Park,” the release said.
Free anniversary events include:
>> Friday — at 6:30 p.m., International Lenten potluck.
>> Oct. 3 — 5:30 p.m., Great Vespers service, followed by Greek Glendi (Greek food, music, and dance).
>> Oct. 4— 8:30 a.m., Divine Liturgy, followed by a luau.
The church is at 930 Lunalilo St., between Ward Avenue and Victoria Street; call 521-7220.
