Honolulu native Carissa Moore won the Swatch Women’s Pro in Trestles, Calif., taking home her third Championship Tour victory of the year.
Moore’s final score of 16.37 (8.37 and 8.00) was enough to top Bianca Buitendag of South Africa, who scored 13.84 (7.67 and 6.17).
"This is such a sweet win for me and I’m so, so stoked," Moore said in a news release. "I love this wave — it’s my happy place."
Lileikis named to junior national swim team
Aulea Swim Club’s ‘Aukai Lileikis has been named to USA Swimming’s Junior National Team in the 200 freestyle.
Team members were chosen based on their times in Olympic events from the combined results of all USA Swimming and FINA sanctioned meets, as well as YMCA Long Course Nationals. At last month’s junior nationals in San Antonio, the Punahou School senior finished second in the 200 free and is currently ranked 40th nationally.
National volleyball team remains unbeaten
The U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team, with three players from Hawaii on the roster, completed the round-robin portion of the FIVB World Cup Friday with a sweep of Tunisia in Osaka, Japan.
Setter Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) had a kill and an ace in addition to 30 assists in the 25-15, 25-19, 29-27 win. Libero Erik Shoji (Punahou) had three digs in two sets and reserve setter Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani) played in Set 3 as a serving sub.
The U.S. (8-0) faces Poland (8-0) on Monday in a third-round match of the unbeatens in Tokyo. The top two teams in this event qualify of next summer’s Olympics.
Junior national team wins pool
The U.S. Men’s Junior National Volleyball Team, with two University of Hawaii players on its roster, won its consolation bracket pool with a 25-23, 17-25, 25-20, 25-23 victory over Japan in Mexicali, Mexico.
Outside hitter Kupono Fey (Punahou) put down two kills and setter Jennings Franciskovic came in as a serving specialist in all four sets.
The U.S. (3-3) is seeded No. 1 in the classification bracket that will determine ninth to 12th place. The Americans will play France on Saturday.
Chaminade sweeps Holy Names
The Chaminade volleyball team opened PacWest play with a 25-15, 25-17, 25-15 sweep of Holy Names at McCabe Gym on Friday. Keani Passi led the Silverswords with 13 kills and eight digs. The Silverswords are 8-1 this season.
