Though it seems like the school year just started, for most public school students the first quarter ends Oct. 2. That means it’s time to plan for fall break. Here is a list of some of the offerings around town to keep kids busy during the break from school. Some programs might offer discounts for members. Camps run Oct. 5-9 unless otherwise noted.
>> Elemental Minds’ VEX IQ Robotics STEM Camp: One-week program, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Radford High School. Students in grades 4 through 8 become STEM robotics engineers as they learn about base design, gearing, robotic manipulators and programming while working in teams using VEX IQ kits to design, build and improve a robot. >> Hawaii Nature Center: Fall 2015 "Sensational Nature Adventure Program" for ages 6 to 11, 2131 Makiki Heights Drive and other field sites. 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m., with extended care (additional $100 for the week or $25 per day) until 5 p.m. Nature activities include forest hikes, stream investigations, crafts, insect safaris, beach explorations, off-site field trips. * For grades 4 through 6, 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., 900 S. Beretania St. Includes sessions on drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking, with tours of the museum’s art galleries.
* For grades 2 through 4, 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Spalding House studio, 2411 Makiki Heights Drive. Students explore media in drawing, painting, sculpture and textiles, with tours of the Spalding House galleries and gardens.
>> "I Got Skills" Fall Break soccer camps: Two locations, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., drop-off from 8:30 a.m., pickup by 3:30 p.m. The camp at Central Oahu Regional Park, 94 Kamehameha Highway, Waipahu, is for boys and girls ages 6 to 16, while the camp at Waialae Iki Park, 4850 Kalanianaole Highway, is for boys and girls ages 6 to 14. Both focus on footwork, techniques and moves to beat opponents while participants improve soccer skills and develop confidence with the ball. Beginners learn fundamentals and ball mastery, while Elite players work on advanced skills. Must wear proper soccer attire, including cleats and shin guards, and bring a ball, water bottle and lunch. >> i9 Sports’ Fall Basketball Day Camp: Oct. 5-8 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Oct. 9 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., Holy Nativity School, 5286 Kalanianaole Highway, Aina Haina. The program, which groups together boys and girls ages 6 to 8 and ages 9 to 12, utilizes fun games, a multistation format and independent line drills to teach fundamental offensive and defensive skills and concepts; it culminates with a scrimmage game to exercise skills developed over the week. Wear appropriate attire, athletic shorts and shoes, and bring a water bottle. Students in grades 1 through 8 are offered courses in designing, building and testing robots to gain technological experience and learn new skills while building on creativity and teamwork. Classes include "Coding With Kano" for grades K through 5, "Lego Wedo" for grades 1 through 3, "Lego Mindstorms" for grades 4 through 6, "Vex IQ" for grades 4 through 6 and "Vex" for grades 6 through 8. >> "Keiki Phit": 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Manoa Valley District Park, lower pavilion; half-day option, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Features aerobic exercises and games, cooperative "buddy" games, personal-best challenges, basketball, S.P.A.R.K. (Sports Play and Active Recreation Training for Kids) activities and more, while students learn proper techniques of athletic-training fundamentals to enhance performance, prevent injury and build self-confidence. Portions of this program will be led by Byron Mello, Moanalua High School head coach and founder of Performance Basketball Clinics, and Dean Kashiwabara, a physical therapist who specializes in orthopedics and sports-medicine injuries. >> Camp Bishop Museum: Includes several off-site adventures and on-site activities, daily access to the Science Adventure Center, Hawaii Hall and the museum’s latest exhibits. For grades K through 6. Drop-off and pickup at this site; sign-in by 8 a.m. Cost: $55 per day.
>> Camp Sea Life Park Junior Animal Trainer Program: Keiki interact with the ocean’s sea creatures and animals and enjoy daily adventures at the park. For grades K through 6. Drop-off and pickup at this site; sign-in by 8 a.m. Cost: $225.
>> SPIRIT Adventures: For grades 5 through 8 with pickup and drop-off at: Mililani Tech Park, Voyager Public Charter School and Ben Parker, Hahaione and Waimalu elementary schools; must be signed in by 7 a.m. Independent and adventurous campers participate in surfing, sailing, kayaking, dancing and cooking. >> Kroc Center Hawaii: "Camp Teamwork," 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., 91-3257 Kualakai Parkway, Ewa Beach. >> Skate Care Hawaii’s Fall Camp: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Hickam Air Force Base, Hickam Skate Hangar, 900 Hangar Ave., Building 2065. Five-day clinic offers three hours of group instruction and two hours of free skate time per day in Hawaii’s largest indoor skate facility. Participants learn proper techniques in a positive environment. Must bring own skateboard, helmet, kneepads, elbow pads, lunch and water bottle. >> Test-Prep Hawaii: SAT-preparation classes, Oct. 5-9. Students in grades 9 through 12 gain test-taking confidence through practice and by learning time-management tips. One-week sessions will be held at the following high schools: Moanalua, 9 to 11 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.; Roosevelt, 10 a.m. to noon; Mililani, noon to 2 p.m.; Kalani, 1 to 3 p.m.; and Castle, 2 to 4 p.m. Cost: $200.
