The U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team, with three players with Hawaii ties on the roster, moved one step closer to the FIVB World Cup title and a berth in the 2016 Olympic Games after defeating Iran, 20-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21, Thursday in Osaka, Japan.
Setter Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) had six kills, four aces and a block in addition to 42 assists. Libero Erik Shoji (Punahou) had nine digs and reserve setter Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani) added a dig when used as a serving sub in two sets.
The Americans (7-0) face Tunisia (0-6) as round-robin play continues on Friday.
Fey lifts USA junior team over Mexico
Hawaii junior hitter Kupono Fey had a match-high 12 kills as the U.S. Men’s Junior National Volleyball Team swept host Mexico 25-23, 25-17, 25-17 in a FIVB U21 World Championship consolation bracket pool play match Wednesday at Mexicali (Mexico) State Auditorium.
Rainbow Warrior setter Jennings Franciskovic had two aces as a serving sub and Fey (Punahou) one. The Americans finish pool play against Japan on Thursday.
