Hilo suffers through fourth straight day of record heat
The high temperature at the Hilo airport of 90 degrees Monday tied the high for the date set in 1976.
It was the fourth straight day of record high temperatures for usually rainy Hilo and the sixth record high this month.
On Sunday, the high temperature of 91 degrees broke the old record of 87 set last year. Saturday’s high of 89 degrees broke the 88 degree record set in 1995 and Friday’s high of 89 broke the old record of 87 set in 1990.
Tom Birchard, a meteorologist with the Honolulu office of the National Weather Service said light winds and sunny skies over usually cloudy Hilo are responsible for the string of records.
“The light winds and clear skies in the mornings mean that the temperatures have been warming up rather rapidly,” he said.
Earlier this month, Hilo set high temperature records on Sept. 1 and Sept. 2. The first day of September saw a 92 degree high, breaking the record of 88 set last year. The high of 93 degrees on Sept. 2 shattered the record of 89 set in 1087.

Skies were cloudy over the Hilo Airport Tuesday morning, which could break the record spell., at least for a day.
But Birchard cautioned that record temperatures are still possible Tuesday.
Last month was the hottest August ever for Hilo with an average high temperature of 88.6 degrees.
August saw 17 high-temperature records for the date tied or broken in Hilo. Thanks to Tropical Depression Hilda, Hilo also recorded two daily records for maximum rainfall on Aug. 13 and 14 (1.88 inches and 2.42 inches, respectively).
