Attorney Michael Green said Wednesday that former University of Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan is on the mainland receiving treatment for an old head injury, which Green blames for causing memory problems and led to a recent misdemeanor charge.
Brennan was charged with making a false statement to police because he thought his car was stolen, Green said.
On Monday, Green made a not guilty plea on behalf of his client, who did not appear in court, and requested a jury trial. The case was originally filed in District Court, but is being heard in Circuit Court because of the trial request.
Green said the “trauma-related injury that goes back to his car crash” was to blame for Brennan reporting to police that his vehicle was stolen.
He has no memory of parking his car, but police “have some video he parked it,” Green said. “It’s a misdemeanor, but it’s sad,” he said.
In March 2014, Brennan told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he had been diagnosed with traumatic head injury. He said the condition was caused by a 2010 accident. He was hospitalized for eight days with injuries to his head, ribs and collarbone after the crash.

Coco Palms demolition is approved
The Kauai County Planning Department has issued permits for demolition of the shuttered Coco Palms Hotel to prepare for its reconstruction.
The department released the permits Wednesday. Under the permit requirements, demolition must be completed within six months.
The department has received verification from the state Historic Preservation Division that Coco Palms Hui, LLC has met the requirements related to demolition and reconstruction of the hotel.
Coco Palms has been closed since 1992, when Hurricane Iniki caused extensive damage.
The hotel is slated to reopen in 2017.
