Fifty-two homes, including ones shown here, have been built by their owners at the Maili Self-Help Housing Subdivision in West Oahu. Another 12 families are slated to break ground on their homes Wednesday at the 72-lot subdivision.

Self-Help Housing Team 5 Project participants Pua Durell and her husband Cody Durell, right, posed for a photo with Gov. David Ige on Wednesday following the Self-Help Housing Corp.’s groundbreaking ceremony at the project’s site in Maili. Community members, politicians and program participants gathered to celebrate the 12 families who will help each other build their homes. Each family pays $285,000 for the lot, materials and some contractor work. In the end, they get a home appraised at $415,000.
