Maui police said the man fatally shot Wednesday night in a park in Kahului was suspected of impersonating a law enforcement officer and fired gunshots at officers.
The man has been identified as a 39-year-old man with no local address.
Police, who Thursday issued more information about the shooting, said the man’s name has been withheld pending notification of his family.
Maui police have scheduled a news media conference for Friday morning about the shooting.
Two patrol officers responded to a call at 8:50 p.m. Wednesday about a man wearing what appeared to be a law enforcement-type badge, police said in a news release Thursday.
The officers arrived on scene at Keopuolani Park at 8:54 p.m., and when they spoke with the man, he came agitated and confrontational, according to police.
“As the male walked away from the officers, he removed an handgun from his waistband, turned and began firing in the direction of the officers,” police said.
The two patrol officers returned fire, and a third officer arrived and also shot at the man, police said.
After the man was shot, the officers started to administer lifesaving measures, and medics arrived to continue medical treatment, police said.
The man died at the scene.
One of the officers has been with the police force for seven years, another for four years and the third for one year, police said.
As a matter of standard practice, the three officers have been placed on administrative leave.
“Their return to duty has not been determined at this time,” police said.
