A 39-year-old man, who Maui police say was impersonating a law enforcement officer, was shot at least 11 times in Wednesday’s fatal gunfight with police officers.

At a news conference Friday, Maui Police Captain David Silva, commander of the department’s Criminal Investigative Division, said three officers were involved in the shooting at Keopuolani Park at 8:54 p.m.

Police say the man, who had no local address, had reportedly been impersonating a law enforcement officer and was holding what he claimed was a U.S. Immigration badge.

The man has been identified as a 39-year-old African American with no local address. Police  say he was dressed in plain clothes—a long sleeve shirt and tie and slacks.

His name was being withheld pending notification of family members.

“This individual (the caller) was at the park and the perpetrator went up to him and I guess was questioning him about why he was there and actually had a badge that said he was a law enforcement (officer),” said Silva.

The caller became suspicious and called police.

The gun used by the man was described as a 9 mm and was registered to a business.

“He did speak with the police officers, became confrontational, and there were words exchanged. As what they were,” I cannot tell you right now,” said Silva.

“As the male walked away from the officers, he removed a handgun from his waistband, turned and began firing in the direction of the officers,” Maui police said in a Thursday news release.

The two patrol officers returned fire, and a third officer arrived and also shot at the man, police said.

During an initial investigation police recovered over 50 shell casings, nine of them from the suspect. Police say the man sustained an estimated 11 gun shot wounds that were located on various parts of his body from his legs to the top of his torso, according to Silva.

The man died at the scene.

Police say he was on Maui for about two years, and prior to that, he was on Oahu for about three years. Police confirmed that he had a prior arrest record in California.

One of the officers has been with the police force for seven years, another for four years and the third for one year, police said.

As a matter of standard practice, the three officers have been placed on administrative leave.

“Their return to duty has not been determined at this time,” police said.
