Victim in fatal crash in Kailua-Kona identified

The driver of a sedan was killed in a head-on collision early Monday morning in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island.








Hawaii County police identified a 52-year-old Kailua-Kona man who was killed in an early Monday morning two-vehicle crash as Robert N. Weinstock. 

Weinstock was driving a 2003 Nissan sport utility vehicle when a green 2007 Ford pickup truck traveling west on Kaiminani Drive crossed the center line before the Laui Street intersection, and crashed head on into the Nissan.

Police were called at 12:41 a.m. to the scene. 

Both drivers were taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where Weinstock was pronounced dead at 1:29 a.m. 

The pickup truck driver, a 26-year-old Kailua-Kona man, was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. 

He was released pending further investigation while being treated at the hospital. 

Police have opened a negligent homicide investigation. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call officer Justin Hooser or Sgt. Bradley Freitas at 326-4646, ext. 229.

This was the 14th Hawaii island traffic fatality this year compared with eight at the same time last year.
