Record miles driven in May
U.S. drivers put a record number of miles on their cars in May, helped by a growing economy and cheap gasoline.
American motorists traveled 275.1 billion miles in May and have totaled 1.26 trillion so far this year, a record for the first five months of the year.
Why are the roads getting more crowded? More than 4 million Americans have gotten jobs since the beginning of 2014, creating more daily commutes, and gasoline prices are down 26 percent from last year’s peak.
All of this driving is good news for U.S. refiners, which processed a record amount of crude into fuel last week. The profit for making fuel along the Gulf Coast, where about half of the nation’s refineries are located, is the highest for this time of year in at least a decade, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Tesla offering cash incentives
DETROIT >> Electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc. is offering its first incentive: $1,000 to new-car buyers who are referred by current Tesla owners.
Owners who make a referral also will get $1,000 in their Tesla account that can be spent on a car purchase, service or accessories.
CEO Elon Musk says the $2,000 is about equal to what it costs to sell a car through a company store and he’s passing it on to customers.
New car orders must be placed by Sept. 30.
FTC looking at practices of University of Phoenix
WASHINGTON >> The University of Phoenix, which runs an online college popular among veterans, is under federal investigation for possible unfair business practices, its parent company, the Apollo Education Group, told shareholders Wednesday.
The for-profit, publicly traded company, which has campuses in downtown Honolulu and Kapolei, is the largest recipient of federal student aid for veterans. Since 2009, when the GI Bill expanded student aid benefits for veterans, the University of Phoenix online program has collected more than $488 million in tuition and fees for veterans — a figure that dwarfs nearly every other institution identified as a GI recipient by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company disclosed that it had received a “civil investigative demand” from the Federal Trade Commission this week. According to the document, investigators asked for information on a “broad spectrum” of matters including marketing, recruiting, enrollment, financial aid, tuition, academic programs, billing and debt collection, as well as other facets of the business. The filing lists “military recruitment” as one of the areas the FTC is examining.
The filing said Apollo is “evaluating the demand and intends to cooperate fully with the FTC.”
