As the senior men’s crew from Lanikai Canoe Club prepares to vie for a fifth consecutive victory at Saturday’s Walter J. Macfarlane Regatta in Waikiki, the Kailua-based team put its winning strategy in motion a week early.
Lanikai completed the 1.5-mile course in 11 minutes and 40.40 seconds and came from behind to knock off previously undefeated Kailua (11:41.95) in one of the marquee events within the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association’s Waimanalo Regatta held Sunday at Waimanalo Beach Park. Hui Nalu (11:46.61) and Outrigger (11:59.09) were also within range of pulling the upset, but Lanikai used a late push to make up enough distance during the five-turn race.
“That was a big win for us — we finally came together and blended well,” said Lanikai steersman Cheyne Mench. “It’s always fun to race against the guys from Kailua, Hui Nalu and Outrigger.”
Mench was joined in the winning canoe by Matt Crowley, Chauncey Cody, Matthew Mench, Bobby Pratt and Andreas Gaeta. The steersman explained that his crew “made money” in the quarter-mile straightaways separating each turn.
“Our coaches put together a great training program, so we just need to stick to that,” Mench said.
If Lanikai does paddle to victory on Saturday in the unpredictable waters off Waikiki, it will mark the fifth consecutive year that the senior men sip champagne from the perpetual Walter Macfarlane Memorial Trophy — an annual tradition performed by the winning crew in front of Duke’s, which currently stands where the original Outrigger Canoe Club once operated.
“We knew the crew would be competitive, but it’s always nice to break through and win it,” said Lanikai men’s coach Kalani Irvine. “We use (the Waikiki regatta) as an incentive for guys to turn things up — guys always look forward to drinking out of the silver cup.”
Irvine noted that the “dangling carrot” of racing at the Macfarlane Regatta helps paddlers make the transition from the one-man canoe paddling season, which ended later than usual this season.
“The transition from one-man to six-man takes a little time, so as coaches, our job is to help them get better from now until (state championships),” Irvine said.
Paddlers were cooled by steady sea breezes under partly cloudy skies throughout Sunday’s regatta as nearly 3,300 competitors ranging in age from 12-and-under to 65-and-above represented OHCRA’s 18 member clubs in 43 races spanning a quarter-mile to 1.5 miles. Winning crews earned 7 points toward the team standings, while second-, third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-place finishers were awarded 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points.
Two-time defending OHCRA champion Hui Nalu won its fourth consecutive AAA division (27-42 crews entered) and overall regatta title of 2015 with 174 points stemming from nine race victories. Lanikai (171 points), which won a regatta-high 11 events, claimed second place ahead of Outrigger (148 points) and Kailua (134 points) to round out the large division.
Hui Lanakila and Healani (50 points apiece) shared the AA division (14-26 crews entered) title, barely edging Keahiakahoe (49 points), while host club Waimanalo (33 points) claimed the A division (1-13 crews entered) trophy ahead of Anuenue (18 points) and Koa Kai (16 points).
In addition to battling for gold in individual races, crews continued to qualify for the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championship regatta scheduled for Aug. 1 at Hilo Bay. The top five crews from each OHCRA event earn automatic berths in the state race based on cumulative point standings.
OHCRA returns to action on Saturday at Waikiki Beach for the annual Macfarlane Regatta, an event that does not count toward the season-long point standings. Na ‘Ohana O Na Hui Wa‘a holds its seventh event of the season Sunday with the North Shore Regatta at Haleiwa Beach Park.
Team Bradley claims Liberty Challenge
After finishing second to the Waikiki Beach Boys in last year’s 41-mile Na Wahine O Ke Kai race from Molokai to Oahu, Team Bradley showed clubs from around the world that it is on a path to redemption in 2015.
Team Bradley, which is expected to race for its ninth Na Wahine O Ke Kai title in 11 years later in the fall, claimed the women’s open division of the 19th annual Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge on June 20 in the waters of New York Harbor. The race spanned 15 miles as crews of six paddlers apiece navigated a picturesque yet potentially dangerous course that took the athletes alongside the World Trade Center, Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty.
Lori Nakamura, Dane Ward, Mahealani Botelho, Alana Frazier, Nicole Pedersen and Noelani Sawyer-Auger powered Team Bradley to a winning mark of 2 hours, 11 minutes and 58 seconds and finished nearly five minutes ahead of runner-up Washington (D.C) Canoe Club.
The men’s unlimited division, in which racing canoes are often lighter and sleeker than traditional fiberglass or koa vessels, provided an exciting finish as Newport Aquatic Center (Calif.) completed the distance race in 1 hour, 45 minutes and 17 seconds. Kamanu, a crew from Kailua, crossed the line 59 seconds later and fellow Hawaii crews Team Primo of Maui (1:48:14) and Team Hawaiian Airlines of Honolulu (1:51:44) rounded out the top four.
In the men’s open division, Kauai Wa‘a (1:54.57) finished nearly two minutes behind SAMU, an all-star crew from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The unsponsored Garden Isle crew was heralded by race officials for fundraising to make the trip to New York and nearly winning the field composed of primarily professional teams.
