The city Medical Examiner’s Office on Wednesday identified a man and a woman who died in separate ocean incidents off Waikiki and Ewa Beach.
Lourdes Hale, 83, of Waipahu died Saturday in a hospital where she was taken after getting into trouble off Ewa Beach on Friday. An autopsy revealed the cause of death was due to a heart condition, diabetes and asthma, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.
The cause of death is still pending test results for Ralph Savoi, 54, of Whittier, Calif., who was found near Tonggs surf break Monday afternoon. Surfers brought him to shore near Kaimana Beach, where he was pronounced dead.
Woman freed amid abuse investigation
Hawaii island police have released without charges a Kailua-Kona woman who was arrested early Monday after a domestic dispute sent a man to a hospital in critical condition.
On Tuesday afternoon, after conferring with prosecutors, detectives released the 18-year-old woman, who was being held at the Kona police cellblock, pending further investigation.
A 20-year-old Kailua-Kona man was taken to Kona Community Hospital late Sunday with a cut to his left forearm. He was later transferred to Kaiser Medical Center on Oahu, where he remains in critical condition.
At 10:05 p.m. Sunday, officers were at Kona Community Hospital for an unrelated case when the man arrived in a private vehicle and was taken to the emergency room.
Investigation revealed that he had suffered the injury during a domestic altercation at a home on Awakea Street in Kailua-Kona. Shortly after midnight, officers arrested the woman on suspicion of first-degree assault and abuse of a family or household member.
Kona man charged with vehicle theft
A Kailua-Kona man has been charged with three offenses after a police investigation into the theft of a truck earlier this month.
Detectives on Tuesday charged Christiansan Kaawa, 25, with second-degree theft and two counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. His bail was set at $6,000.
At 11:10 a.m. June 14, a 61-year-old Kailua-Kona man reported that his pickup truck with an attached utility trailer had been stolen from an area near Hawaii Belt Road and the Makalei Golf Course. The truck was found later that day about 2 miles away. Some items were reported missing.
Kaawa was arrested at 3 a.m. Monday during a traffic stop on Ane Keohokalole Highway.
He was taken to the Kona police cellblock while detectives continued the investigation, which led to an allegation that Kaawa stole an all-terrain vehicle in Holualoa sometime between June 13 and 15, police said.
