As the outrigger canoe paddling season shifts into full gear, paddlers and coaches representing one of the sport’s original teams used the “opening day” festivities as a way to focus on family.
Sunday’s 25th annual Clement D. Paiaina Regatta marked the start of the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association summer regatta season. The event is named after Healani Canoe Club’s former president who died in 1991 after 40-plus years of leading the organization.
Healani, which means “heavenly mist” in Hawaiian, was originally formed in 1890 as Healani Boat Club and eventually became one of OHCRA’s initial members when OHCRA was established in 1979.
“It’s a privilege to honor him every year,” said Pua Paiaina, Clement’s granddaughter and longtime vice president of Healani. “Our coaches carry on the characteristics of my grandfather, and even to this day, we don’t know how he handled everything — running the club and the family — for 40-plus years. He was a great example and is one of my heroes.”
As some of Healani’s paddlers noted while taking respite from the heat at a sun-soaked Keehi Lagoon, the regatta was about ‘ohana and putting “Hawaiian” back into the experience. Paddlers wore hand-crafted lei haku on their heads and Healani members adorned the Keehi Lagoon pavilion along with the adjacent beach and club tent with foliage and Hawaiian flags to enhance the cultural experience.
Healani relies on an experienced leadership team bolstered by relatives of Clement Paiaina, including club president Clement Paiaina Jr. (son), vice president Pua and head coach Kea Paiaina (grandchildren) and secretary Celeste Paiaina (Kea’s wife). Kea and Celeste’s two daughters and Pua’s son are also involved with the club and could help carry on the family tradition as representatives of the fourth generation.

“It gets emotional during the morning meeting when we’re together as an entire club, I had to stop and gather myself,” Kea Paiaina said. “I’m trying to fill my grandfather’s shoes and the club makes it easier. We have great coaches and people involved; everyone works hard and has fun.”
Healani relocated to Sand Island nine years ago as a new home base for practices and meetings after previously working out in the busy — and polluted — Ala Wai Canal, which Clement Paiaina helped turn into a hub for paddlers to train in. The elder Paiaina also helped lead the charge for the construction of 13 canoe houses around Oahu to help local clubs store their valuable canoes and equipment — so far 10 of the hale have been built.
OHCRA president Luana Froiseth recalls “Mr. P.” taking canoe paddling to the next level while keeping the Hawaiian aspect intact.
“He was the ambassador of canoe paddling, if you needed help, Mr. P. was always there for you,” Froiseth said. “Like my parents did, he taught me to always give back. For Kea and Pua it’s a blessing to have had a grandfather like that and now they can carry on the legacy.”
Two-time defending OHCRA champion Hui Nalu came from behind to tie Kailua for the regatta’s AAA division (27-42 crews entered) and overall title as the clubs each amassed 164 points. Outrigger (156 points), which won a regatta-high 12 events, claimed third place and Lanikai (151 points) rounded out the large division.
Keahiakahoe (56 points) fended off Healani (50 points) to claim the AA division (14-26 crews entered), which also included Hui Lanakila (38 points) and Waikiki Surf Club (28 points).
Leeward Kai (28 points) edged Waimanalo (22 points) to earn the A division (1-13 crews entered) hardware.
In one of the day’s highly anticipated marquee matchups, Kailua claimed the 1.5-mile senior men’s race after sprinting to a mark of 11 minutes and 31.16 seconds. The crew of Jason Akamine, Gavin Hanoa, Maui Cambra, Conrad Martin, Levi-Jordan Goeas and Chris Tanaka navigated the five-turn course deftly while fending off late charges from Outrigger (11:34.54), Lanikai (11:37.30) and Healani (11:43.56).
Paddlers enjoyed steady trade winds and clear skies as nearly 3,300 competitors ranging in age from 12-and-under to 65-and-above represented OHCRA’s 18 member clubs in 43 races spanning a quarter mile to 1.5 miles. Winning crews earned 7 points toward the team standings, while second-, third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-place finishers were awarded 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points, respectively.
In addition to battling for gold in individual races, crews aimed to qualify for the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championship regatta scheduled for Aug. 1 at Hilo Bay. The top five crews from each OHCRA event earn automatic berths in the state race based on cumulative point standings.
OHCRA returns to action on Sunday at Kailua Beach Park for the King Kamehameha Regatta. Na ‘Ohana O Na Hui Wa‘a holds its fourth event of the season Sunday with the Lokahi Regatta at Keehi Lagoon.
