The suspect in last week’s attempted murder and arson case in a Kalihi apartment allegedly set a 57-year-old woman on fire after allegedly stabbing the victim multiple times, Deputy Prosecutor Patricia Kickland said Thursday.
Kickland made the comments to a state judge Thursday after an Oahu grand jury returned an indictment charging Mavourneen Rombawa with attempted murder, arson and kidnapping.
Circuit Judge Richard Perkins confirmed Rombawa’s bail at $150,000.
Rombawa, 37, has been in custody since her arrest on May 20.
Kickland said Rombawa entered the victim’s apartment on May 20 through an unlocked door and asked the occupant if she could take a bath. After the resident said no, Rombawa stabbed the woman, Kickland said, and the suspect then used wire to tie the woman to a chair, poured vegetable oil over her, the chair and the floor, and set the woman on fire.
Rombawa also threatened to kill the victim, Kickland said.
Witnesses saw Rombawa fleeing the Kamehameha IV Road apartment and one of them stopped her, Kickland said.
When police arrived, they found Rombawa washing her hands in the apartment complex’s laundry area. They also found a bloody knife near her, Kickland said.
A city ambulance transported the 57-year-old victim to the hospital in serious condition.
The victim told authorities she did not let Rombawa into her apartment and does not know her, while Rombawa told them the woman is an acquaintance who let her in to take a bath, Kickland said.
The indictment also serves Rombawa notice that the state intends to seek extended sentencing if she is found guilty because she is a persistent offender facing multiple felonies.
An extended sentence would boost the penalty for attempted second-degree murder to life in prison with no opportunity for parole from life with parole if she is convicted.
Rombawa’s state criminal record includes a 1998 conviction for burglary and a 2005 conviction for second-degree theft. She also has a 2002 federal conviction for cocaine possession.
