UH’s Nguyen bounced from NCAA tourney
University of Hawaii sophomore Cindy Nguyen’s season ended with a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Clemson senior Beatrice Gumulya in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday in Waco, Texas.
Nguyen had a seven-match winning streak snapped with a first-round exit in her second appearance in the NCAA tournament. She entered the tournament ranked 95th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and ended the season at 15-7 overall.
Nguyen, the Rainbow Wahine program’s first Big West Player of the Year, opened the match at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center with a service break. But Gumulya, ranked 60th in the country, answered with a break and kept Nguyen on the run while sweeping through the rest of the first set.
Gumulya went up a break early in the second set and Nguyen came back to tie the set at 3-3. Gumulya broke Nguyen’s serve again then held to push her lead to 5-3. Nguyen held serve but Gumulya closed out the match to advance to the round of 32.
Nguyen also lost in the first round last year, when she became the first UH player to qualify for the NCAA singles tournament. She earned the Big West’s automatic berth to return this season and was named the ITA’s Southwest Region Player to Watch going into next season.
Chaminade receives $500K for facilities
Chaminade University recently received $500,000 in major gifts to support the development of its new athletics facilities, the school announced Wednesday.
Three members of Chaminade’s Board of Regents—Carolyn Berry Wilson, Capt. David Wilson, and Board Chair Vaughn Vasconcellos—contributed a total of $300,000, while private foundations made up the other $200,000.
The complex will include new coaches offices named after Vasconcellos and the Wilsons, fully equipped locker rooms, and training amenities located on the lower campus. Contruction is slated to begin this summer and is projected to be finished in December.
