Hana played well in spurts, then fell into concentration lapses.
But the second-seeded Dragons recovered to sweep St. Francis 25-10, 25-23, 25-22 in Friday’s Division II semifinals of the New City Nissan/HHSAA State Volleyball Championships at Farrington.
Hana (12-3), making its first state tournament appearance since 2008, will play Hawaii Baptist in Saturday’s 5 p.m. championship at the Blaisdell.
"I thought we could’ve done better in terms of our passing and communication skills and defensive skills," Hana coach Kimo Helekahi said. "I knew we could’ve played better volleyball, but we’ll take the win.
"I want us to pass better, (work) on our defense and just have fun."
Hana’s Noah Hoopai-Feliciano had 12 kills and one hitting error for a .423 hitting percentage. He added 11 digs as Hana will make its first finals appearance since 2006, when it lost to Maryknoll.
"It’s huge, 2006 was the last time Hana went to the championship," Helekahi said. "To do it again now, it’s a great feeling. We just happen to be in the championship game. Regardless of the outcome, we’re happy to be here."
Supilani Mailei and Viliami Pua had seven kills each for the Saints (6-7), who finished the match hitting .000.
The point of emphasis during a timeout late in Set 3 was communication. The Dragons led 20-14 before the Saints rallied to tie it at 21. Justin Sarsuelo had four kills during the Saints’ run.
"We needed to pick it up, pick up our defense, pick up our communication skills — just clean up our defense," Helekahi said.
Chasen Kanakaole’s kill after the timeout and Saint Francis’ hitting error put the Dragons ahead 23-21. Mailei then had a kill after Saint Francis’ timeout. Hoopai-Feliciano followed with a kill to put Hana at match point and Saint Francis hit long to end the match.
"We’re pretty stoked right now," Hoopai-Feliciano said. "We never go (to the finals) for nine years."
Jordan Redo-Rost had 18 assists, 12 digs and seven kills for Hana. Redo-Rost’s play at the net confused Saint Francis.
"Hana is a well-rounded team, they have a lot of hitters, their setter is awesome," Saint Francis coach Dustin Ahuna-Haliniak said. "They made us work really hard. You never knew if he was going to dump or if he was going to set. Our boys weren’t used to that, they’ve never seen a setter like that."
Added Hoopai-Feliciano: "He’s a great setter. He brings a lot of excitement."
HAWAII BAPTIST 3, KAUAI 0
Focusing on the little details will be key for Hawaii Baptist’s drive for a fifth consecutive state title.
The Eagles (11-0) advanced to the championship match with a 25-16, 25-19, 25-15 win over the Red Raiders.
"Sometimes the moment takes over and we’re not doing the little things that we normally do," said Hawaii Baptist coach Teoni Obrey. "Hopefully we can calm ourselves down and just play the next point, focus on our side of the net and the things we do well."
Obrey said Hana’s style is something his squad has never seen.
"Extremely crafty and unorthodox, something we haven’t seen all year long," Obrey said. "We’re really going to have pay attention to the details."
Brett Miller had 14 kills and Isaac Liva had 11 for the Eagles. Hawaii Baptist served tough and finished with 10 aces to Kauai’s one.
Kealii Colipano had seven kills for Kauai (11-5), which hit just .030 but outblocked Hawaii Baptist 12 to four.
"They blocked a ton of balls against us," Obrey said. "We weren’t really being smart with our hits, we weren’t doing a good job of covering. Once we were able to move our middles around a bit more, hit a little bit different angles, we got some point and separation."
