Another week, another record for the Kaiser girls 4×400-meter relay team.
The Cougars’ close-knit foursome of Tommi Hintnaus, Celine Lum, Kristen O’Handley and Teuila Gardner capped off a winning night by breaking the OIA track and field championship meet record in the 4×400 on Saturday at Mililani. Kaiser’s winning time was 4 minutes, 0.43 seconds and the 4×400 was one of six events the Cougars won en route to their second consecutive team title. Kaiser finished with 121.33 points.
"When you think about track specifically, it takes a certain concentration of will," said Gardner, a senior who anchored the winning 4×400 and 4×100 and won the high jump and 800-meter run. "Being anchor didn’t make me feel different than running any other leg because we’re so dependent on each other. For that, we couldn’t be any more thankful. As long as you’re believing in each other, you have the confidence to exceed."
One week after setting the 4×400 record at the Punahou Relays, Kaiser broke the 4×400 record of 4:01.11 set by Campbell last year. Kaiser was dominant throughout the meet and its girls placed first and second in the pole vault, high jump, 400 and 800. Lum won her second pole vault title by setting a record of 12 feet, 1 inch on Thursday. O’Handley won the 400.
"With all our events in between, it kind of makes it a bit harder to prep, to run a fresh run," Gardner said. "Today was definitely a test of our performance."
Kaiser’s ascension started last year when the relay squad started running together. The next goal is to beat the state-meet record of 3:57.47.
"Once we just took heed into the belief we could all do our best and reach these certain goals — being a small team — we have to run a lot of events," Gardner said. "The support from our coaches and family, and just being close with each other, that helped most tremendously to any training we’ve had."
Campbell’s boys scored 67 points to win their second team title. The Sabers placed first and second in Thursday’s high jump, giving them 18 points heading into Saturday’s finals. Corey Cooper won the 200 and the team relied on alternates to wrap up the win after injuries from Thursday’s trials.
"I’m glad a couple of our alternates got in and did a good job by placing," Campbell coach Wyatt Tau said. "Just a good team effort."
Maunakea Medeiros and Zibrex Cabel were first and second in the high jump. Medeiros was the surprise of the meet, a football defensive end who was adamant at high jumping.
"He comes in with no form, no technique but wanted to do it," Tau said with a big smile. "And he’s not even our best jumper. He’s our three."
The Sabers also overcame a disqualification and a scratch by two of its runners in the 110 hurdles.
"The minor fallback and setbacks we had today, it’s amazing," said Cooper, who won the 200 in 22.36.
