Damien relied on hot-hitting Jayden Cabbab, who went 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs driven in, as the Monarchs defeated Hanalani 4-3 in the play-in game of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II playoffs Thursday afternoon at Ala Wai Park.

Kaeo Castaneda went the distance for Damien on the mound, and while he allowed nine hits, the Royals could not score in the seventh and final frame to extand the contest.

Kevin Matsuoka also notched a complete game for Hanalani. Teammates Aaron Leong, Keenan Cooper and Zane Pantil collected two hits apiece, while Leong drove in two runs in what proved to be the season finale for the Royals.

With the win, Damien advances to take on top-seeded Maryknoll at Hans L’Orange Park on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the first round of the league’s postseason tournament. Also on Saturday, second-seeded Pac-Five takes on third-seeded St. Francis at Hans L’Orange at 3 p.m.
