When the crowds are louder and the cameras are on, Alan Cabanting wants his younger Moanalua volleyball players to perform seamlessly.

Cabanting gave his youngsters extensive playing time in Wednesday’s 25-18, 25-13 win over Kalani in an OIA East match. Austin Matautia had 12 kills and three aces for host and third-ranked Moanalua (8-0).

“Just getting more of them to be playing in front of a big crowd, in front of a TV,” said Cabanting after Wednesday’s live broadcast. “There’s always that different feeling. If we can get them in that position a little earlier, and knock on wood, but if anything happens to any of our players, at any time we can fill those shoes.”

Na Menehune, who usually run a two-setter offense, went mainly with Zach Kagehiro on Wednesday. He finished with 21 assists and spread the ball to multiple players. Four Na Menehune finished with four kills each.

“We practice it (one-setter offense) sometimes in practice we go over every rotation just in case something happens, if a player can’t play,” Kagehiro said. “We tried to get everyone an equal amount of playing time. During the end of the season, when it’s crunch time, they have the experience to play in the games that we need them.”

Cabanting said Kagehiro, a junior, is still learning on the court. He wants him to be able to run an offense that keeps the opponent guessing where the ball is going.

“It’s about creating an offense so the other side is constantly trying to figure out where is he going next, where is he going next kind of deal,” Cabanting said. “Especially if we have firepower from all the different areas, he should be able to utilize every single one of them. If we’re in trouble, if the passing breaks down, they know who the ball is going to (Matautia).”

Spreading the ball on offense will take the pressure off of Matautia.

“We tried to get it to the middles, establish them early in the game because Austin is a big asset for us,” Kagehiro said. “Establishing the middles will help us more.”

Kills from Matautia and Gabriel Cruz helped Moanalua pull away from Kalani (4-3) midway through Set 1. Kamalu Kaaa had three kills as Moanalua broke away midway through Set 2. Moanalua’s serving and attack disrupted Kalani’s passing.

“Our goal was just to take a set,” Kalani coach Chad Reis said. “If we could hang in for set, we’ve never seen what they could do if they lost a set, they haven’t been tested like that. If we could do that, we would’ve put ourselves in good shape.”

Moanalua plays at undefeated Kahuku (8-0) on Monday. Cabanting knows the Red Raiders will have great crowd support that will provide a boost to the home team.

“The crowd is going to be a big deal,” Cabanting said. “Kahuku has great fans, big community support. They’re going to be in it and feeding off that emotion, off of their crowd. They’re going have that intensity going into it.”
