No tsunami threat from magnitude-7.7 quake in New Guinea
No Pacific-wide tsunami was generated from a magnitude-7.7 earthquake in Papua New Guinea on Sunday, U.S. scientists said.
The quake occurred at 1:48 p.m., Hawaii time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no Pacific-wide seismic sea waves would be generated from the temblor, but that waves of 3 to 10 feet above tide level could be expected along some New Guinea coastlines.
Tsunami waves of less than a foot were forecast for the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.
The epicenter was 25 miles deep and 34 miles southeast of Kokopo in the New Britain region.
The quake was followed by a magnitude-5.7 aftershock.
