Chicago City Council panels endorse Obama library bid

The foundation developing Obama’s future presidential library has commissioned polling in Chicago to determine whether residents support building it on the South Side.

CHICAGO >> Three Chicago City Council committees are recommending the city take control of two pieces of park land on the South Side so that Barack Obama can choose one as the site for his presidential library.

WBBM reports the three panels meeting jointly Wednesday approved an ordinance transferring 20 acres of either Jackson Park or Washington Park to city control if the Barack Obama Foundation picks the University of Chicago’s bid for the library. The foundation wants the city or the university to control the land.

The ordinance goes before the full council next week.

Three other bidders that the president and the first lady are considering are the University of Illinois at Chicago, Columbia University in New York and the University of Hawaii in Honolulu.
