For the second year in a row, the Hawaii Kai Carnival will liven up a normally vacant lot along Kalanianaole Highway between Hawaii Kai Drive and Keahole Street.
There will be a few changes, however, prompted by complaints last year, mostly about traffic.
This year Donna Smith, vice president of E.K. Fernandez Shows, gave a presentation at the Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board’s January meeting to inform the community about the event.
"It was at her initiative," said board Chairman Greg Knudsen. "She contacted me in early January and asked to be on the agenda."
Smith said by phone Monday there will be a second entrance on Keahole Street, meaning those using the park-and-ride lot will have a shorter distance to walk. Last year there was only one entrance, on the Hawaii Kai Drive side.
An area will also be set up for bicyclists on the Hawaii Kai Drive side.
Smith also is encouraging attendees to use TheBus.

Last year the event was held as a fundraiser for Hawaii Speed and Quickness, a nonprofit organization that provides sports training and mentoring to youths. Smith said the group, in turn, made a donation to athletic teams at Kaiser High School
There was some confusion last year, she said, about whether Kaiser High was involved with the carnival. The school is not involved.
This year’s event will again be held as a fundraiser for Hawaii Speed as well as other youth organizations.
Smith said she hopes the carnival can be held every year.
"If the community wants us to come back, we will certainly come back on an annual basis," she said.
