Visits canceled at Big Island prison after lockdown

HILO » Families and friends couldn’t visit prisoners incarcerated at a Big Island prison Saturday because of a lockdown sparked by an inmate who refused to go into his dorm.

The state Department of Public Safety canceled visits at the Kulani Correctional Facility in Hilo. Visits can be rescheduled for Sunday.

The department says the minimum-security facility was under lockdown because of a Friday incident that required guards to use crisis response procedures. The lockdown was lifted late Saturday morning.

When the inmate refused to go into his dorm, other inmates came out to see what was happening. There were no injuries reported.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

The facility reopened last year after being closed since 2009.
