Marine Corps Base Hawaii officials confirmed Friday the 22-year-old man accused of trying to kill two motorcycle police officers is a Marine stationed at the Kaneohe base.
Sean Michael Shipe, who has a history of street racing and speeding reportedly as fast as 116 mph, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of two counts of first-degree attempted murder. He had not been charged as of 7 p.m. Friday in the Thursday case.
"The Marine is currently in the custody of local police pending charges stemming from his attempts to evade them," the base public affairs office said in a written response to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s questions.
Marine officials would not disclose any more information on Shipe as a matter of policy. They said they continue to cooperate with police.
A motorcycle officer initially stopped Shipe at 12:45 p.m. Thursday for allegedly speeding in Kaneohe on the H-3 freeway near Mokapu Saddle Road, where he was accused of trying to hit an officer with his car by swerving toward the officer, who was on foot.
Another motorcycle officer pursued Shipe’s Scion as it headed into Kaneohe, then turned around and headed onto Pali Highway to Nuuanu. Shipe reversed his car and allegedly struck a solo bike officer at Pali Highway and Nuuanu Pali Drive.
Police said Shipe headed back toward Kailua on the Pali and crashed into a vehicle near Castle Junction, tying up traffic for hours as police investigated.
Shipe pleaded no contest to racing in 2013 and 2014, and received a deferred acceptance of a no-contest plea in both. In the 2013 case he was also arrested for allegedly traveling at 116 mph in a 55 mph zone, but pleaded only to the racing charge.
