A power surge at the plate made for a relatively quick Sunday doubleheader for the University of Hawaii softball team.
The Rainbow Wahine hit five home runs, two jumping off the bat of senior Kayla Wartner, and UH closed its run in the Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic with five-inning shutouts against Seattle and Portland State at Stephanie Lynn Craig Softball Complex in Henderson, Nev.
UH broke away early in both games, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning in an 8-0 win over Seattle. UH then jumped out to a five-run lead in the first on their way to an 11-0 rout of Portland State.
UH finished 4-2 in the tournament and return to Honolulu at 7-4 overall.
UH’s senior class accounted for three home runs and drove in eight in the doubleheader in support of shutout performances by pitchers Brittany Hitchcock (3-2) and Kanani Aina Cabrales (3-2).
Wartner, Hawaii’s senior catcher, homered in both games and had two doubles against Portland State. First baseman Leisha Li’ili’i hit her first homer of the season and 39th of her career and drove in four runs in the finale.
"They have to lead our club," UH coach Bob Coolen said. "They’re stalwarts in the two and four hole (in the batting order) and they have to get that lineup going. Kayla got it going today and Leisha hit a bomb. It all worked out well."
Wartner went 11-for-20 in six games in Las Vegas with four doubles and four home runs, raising her career total to 28.
Freshman Rachel Lack and junior transfer Tayana Mata also hit the first home runs of their UH careers. Lack hit a solo shot in the third inning against Seattle (3-6) and Mata hit her first in the third against Portland State (4-6).
Wahine shortstop Sarina Jaramillo went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs against Seattle and Hitchcock held the Redhawks to five hits and a walk. All 15 putouts were recorded by the UH infield with 13 ground-ball outs and two popups.
Aina Cabrales struck out four, walked none and allowed two singles against Portland State in her third shutout of the season. She retired the final seven batters in order.
"Nani’s getting real strong. She’s starting to feel it and popping the ball," Coolen said.
UH left on its first road trip of the season hitting .171 through five games. The Wahine hit .343 with nine home runs in Las Vegas to raise their team batting average to .277 and return home to open the Bank of Hawaii Invitational on Friday.
The Wahine enter the tournament hitting .277 and will be joined in the three-day tournament by No. 15 Washington, Central Florida and UTEP.
