Honolulu officials are reminding Oahu retailers about the island’s upcoming plastic bag ban.
Hawaii News Now reports officials are contacting about 10,000 retailers this week to remind them about the ban, which begins July 1.
Some retailers already are preparing for it. City Mill, for example, plans to use its old inventory before the ban begins.
Under the ban, only compostable plastic bags, recyclable paper bags and reusable bags will be allowed.
Retail Merchants of Hawaii is urging members to complain about the ban through letters to the city. Organization President Sheri Sakamoto says it’s another burden that will result in higher costs going back to consumers.
Honolulu is the last county in Hawaii to implement such a ban.
