Anthem hack leaves some HMSA subscribers at risk
Some HMSA members may have been affected by a recent cyber attack against Anthem Inc., a Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan that serves residents in 14 states. According to company president and CEO Michael Gold, HMSA is working with Anthem and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association to identify and contact the affected members.
Attackers accessed names, birthdays, medical IDs, social security numbers, street and email addresses, and employment information from millions of current and former Anthem members. No credit card or medical information has been reported stolen at this point in the investigation. Anthem is the second-largest U.S. health insurer.
HMSA subscribers who have received medical or hospital services in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia or Wisconsin may be affected, Gold said.
Anthem intends to notify affected subscribers directly.
HMSA has more than 724,000 subscribers, according to their website.
