Spencer Hokama saved the ball and the game.
With time running out, Hokama saved a ball from rolling out, passed it back into the box. The ball landed in front of Kalahikiola Judd, who scored the game-winning goal in Mililani’s 3-2 win over Pearl City in an OIA West boys soccer game on Tuesday.
Judd scored in the first and 78th minutes for the Trojans (8-1), who rallied after the host Chargers (7-2) tied the game midway through the second half.
“I figured there’s only so much time, you got to leave it out there,” Hokama said. “We took a shot on a goal and it happened to roll by. I took a cross and Kala had a nice finish.”
Treyton Kong’s shot from the top of the box veered toward the left of the goal. Hokama said his first instinct was to prevent the ball from going out. His pass got to Judd, who scored from the right.
“Spencer hit it in and I was in the right place at the right time,” Judd said.
Luke Wyman scored both of Pearl City’s goals. Wyman settled a through ball in the box and scored in the 65th minute to tie the game at 2-2. It turned up the intensity of the game.
“It definitely pumped us up,” Wyman said of his second goal. “We just got unlucky at the end.”
The Trojans weren’t willing to settle for a tie. The win keeps Mililani at the top of the OIA West standings with 24 points.
“We knew we had to turn it on,” Hokama said. “We had to play. We couldn’t end up with a tie.”
Added Judd: “This was our hardest game so far this season. They’re a really good team and they’re well rounded.”
The Chargers had a great opportunity to pull ahead in the 75th minute. Hector Jacobo had just one defender on him as he brought the ball down the middle of the field. But Jacobo couldn’t get a shot off.
Judd scored a minute into the game after he got to a long pass sent up the field. He shot the ball at the top of the box as Pearl City’s goalkeeper ran toward the ball.
Wyman scored in the fourth minute to tie it at 1.
Kong scored for Mililani in the 37th minute to put the Trojans ahead 2-1. The ball was headed out of the box off a Trojans corner kick and landed in front of Kong. Undefended, he scored from about 25 yards out.
