For the first time in 256 rounds of golf, Matt Kuchar failed to card at least one birdie.
He had a chance on the last hole to roll in a 10-footer, but missed it. Had he sunk it, he would have finished in a tie for second. The missed putt cost him $201,600.
"I was disappointed to go birdie free today," Kuchar said. "I played nice golf, I hit it, I felt like, very well. I had a number of really good chances on the back nine and wasn’t able to get one to go in."
Kuchar will play in two more events and then return to Hawaii for a long break. Last year, he and his family spent a month on the Big Island. He jokingly said he should be considered a kamaaina for as much time as he spends here each year.
"It was still a good week," Kuchar said of finishing tied for third. "You know, tough day when you got a chance to win a golf tournament and don’t make a birdie all day. Frustrating, but Waialae has been good to me. I really do enjoy my time here. I always look forward to coming here every year; this is one I really get excited to come be a part of."
