During Wednesday’s pro-am round of the Sony Open in Hawaii, a small ceremony for Bill Bachran was held in the media center in the Waialae Country Club.
Bachran, who died last April at age 86, ran the media room for more than 40 years — first the United Airlines Hawaiian Open and then the Sony Open when the golf event changed sponsors in 1999.
Even though he never played the game that much, Bachran knew everything else about golf. The interview room of the media center was named after him. There was a blessing, and a half-hour ceremony where family and friends shared stories about the longtime public relations man for Pan-Am, Hawaiian and United airlines.
