Kalaheo’s second week as the No. 1 team in the state is going well.
The Mustangs used a 16-6 run in the third quarter to pull away from McKinley for a 62-38 win on Tuesday night at their gym. Kaleb Gilmore had five points, three steals and two assists in the third quarter as Kalaheo turned a 30-24 lead into a runaway.
Gilmore finished with a game-high 21 points and Kupaa Harrison added 18 points and six rebounds.
The Mustangs dealt with foul trouble, as did the visiting Tigers, but still commanded a 23-15 edge in rebounding. Nine of Kalaheo’s boards were on the offensive glass. McKinley had just two offensive rebounds and committed 24 turnovers against Kalaheo’s mix of man and zone defenses.
Dan Villejo led McKinley with nine points. It was a turnaround from the last time the teams met, when the Tigers upset Kalaheo during a preseason tournament. Gilmore and Harrison didn’t play in that game, but Kalaheo’s younger contributors got a lot of solid game experience against a Tigers team that has been ranked as high as No. 5.
"The last time we played them, our young guys played well for three quarters, but McKinley wore us down," Kalaheo coach Alika Smith said. "We used it as motivation."
On Tuesday, Gilmore’s pesky on-ball defense made a difference even as officials consistently called it by the book when it came to hand checks. His steal led to a layup by Kekai Smith to give Kalaheo a spark and a 34-24 lead in the third quarter.
"You’ve still got to put pressure on the ball and take what the refs give you. You’ve got to play to the ref," Gilmore said. "I try to get the ball before it hits (the dribbler’s) hand."
After Harrison scored on a three-point play in the paint, Gilmore drove for his own three-point play, and then turned another steal into a fast-break layup for freshman Captain Whitlock.
A moment later, Caleb’s third steal of the quarter led to a fast-break jumper for 2 in the key, and the Mustangs had a 44-26 lead.
Alec MacLeod added 10 points off the bench.
McKinley missed junior guard Huthifah Abdel-Jawad, one of their defensive stoppers. He sat the second half after suffering an apparent back injury.
The Mustangs are showing improvement, even as they are perched atop the Star-Advertiser Top 10. They won’t lack for focus.
"The only poll that matters is the final one after the state tournament," Smith said. "There are no easy games at this point."
