Scarlett Lewis, the mother of a Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victim, will share her views on "Forgiveness, Gratitude and Compassion in the Face of Personal Tragedy" on Jan. 18 at Temple Emanu-El.
Her son Jesse was among 20 students and six adults shot in the Newtown, Conn., massacre on Dec. 14, 2012.
According to a news release, Lewis was inspired by a simple three-word message Jesse had written on their kitchen chalkboard shortly before he died. She began the Jessie Lewis Choose Love Foundation to develop programs to teach children and adults about the power to change one’s thoughts and choose a life without fear and hate.
Lewis also wrote "Nurturing Healing Love," in which she described the transformation she experienced through efforts to turn personal tragedy into something that can change the world.
Refreshments will be available at 10:30 a.m., and the free program is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at the temple, 2550 Pali Highway.
