Maryknoll contained ‘Iolani’s perimeter threats to fend off the host Raiders 34-30 on Tuesday night.
The fifth-ranked Spartans will face a decidedly different challenge when they take on No. 3 Punahou in an early-season showdown on Thursday between the last two undefeated teams in the ILH Division I girls basketball race.
"Tonight we had to take care of the 3-point line; now we have to take care of the paint," Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado said in reference to Punahou’s emphasis on production in the post.
Maryknoll kept pace with Punahou by improving to 4-0, powered in large part to the Spartans’ effort on defense.
Even so, No. 6 ‘Iolani (2-2) stayed within striking distance throughout a low-scoring game by hitting five 3-pointers, three by Camy Aguinaldo.
But the Spartans managed to hold off the Raiders, going 6-for-9 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
"On the defensive end I think we were solid," Furtado said. "We gave up some 3s, but with the amount of 3s they shoot and the amount of shooters they have, you’re going to give up a few. But you hold them to 30 points, 13 in the first half, I thought we defended well."
After ‘Iolani took a 5-0 lead, Maryknoll jumped into the passing lanes to force turnovers on three consecutive possessions, with Alexis Delovio — who finished with a game-high 10 points — converting the first two steals into buckets in a 10-0 Maryknoll run.
The game took on a decidedly deliberate pace for the remainder of the first half and the teams combined for six points and one field goal in the second quarter — a layup by Maryknoll’s Isabella Cravens with 36 seconds left — and Maryknoll took a 15-13 lead into halftime.
"They played a sagging man to man, forced us to be a little more patient in our offense," ‘Iolani coach Dean Young said. "Give credit to Maryknoll, they executed a good game plan and they ran their defense well. They fought through our screens, sagged in the paint to stop the drive."
Maryknoll freshman Rhianne Omori came out of halftime in attack mode and went to the foul line three times in the first 4:30 of the second half and made all six free throws.
"I thought the first half I was slacking a lot, I wasn’t too aggressive," Omori said.
Maryknoll opened a seven-point lead in the third quarter, but Aguinaldo drained 3-pointers late in the third and early in the fourth quarter to keep the Raiders within reach.
‘Iolani closed the gap to 30-28 on Emily Nomura’s drive with 48 seconds left and the Raiders trailed by three coming out of a timeout with 19.9 seconds left.
But ‘Iolani was called for an illegal screen and Omori hit one of two free throws with 10.2 seconds left to give Maryknoll just enough breathing room.
"She’s learning our system, she’s learning my style and I think up until now she’s played a little bit tentative," Furtado said. "Basically, I told her ‘This is why you’re here, this is why you came to Maryknoll, to play in these kinds of games.’
"She’s going to make mistakes as a freshman, but she’s a real good free-throw shooter. … In the second half she was deadly from the line."
