The number of tourists visiting Hawaii rose 2.2 percent last month compared to the year before while spending climbed 3.4 percent.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority said Tuesday more than 637,000 travelers visited the state in November. They spent $1.1 billion during the month.

Arrivals from the western region of the U.S. rose 4.3 percent to almost 268,000.

Nearly 2 percent more Japanese visited in November. But Japanese travelers spent less per person while here, leading to a 4.7 percent decline in Japanese visitor spending.

CEO Ronald Williams says the agency is working to attract tourists from a variety of countries to balance core markets like Japan. He says economic uncertainty in Japan is affecting spending by Japanese travelers.
