Cold front could bring vog, rain, even snow to islands

NOAA / NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
A satellite image taken Friday morning shows a cold front approaching the islands from the northwest and a line of low clouds and showers south of the Big Island.

A change in the weather could bring vog, heavy rain, more surf and even snow to Big Island summits over the next several days.

A cold front is expected to reach the islands by Monday, bringing Kona winds and the chance of vog this weekend and the possibility of heavy showers Monday and Tuesday.

The National Weather Service says there’s a chance of light snow on Big Island summits Sunday and Monday nights. But temperatures are expected to warm during the day and the snow may not stick around until Christmas.

Surf on north and west shores of most islands is expectected to decrease below advisory levels by Friday evening. But another swell is expected to arrive Sunday morning and bring warning-level surf Sunday and Monday.

A small, off-season south swell could also bring 2- to 4-foot surf to south shores Saturday through Monday.

The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for mostly sunny skies Friday with winds slowly turning southerly by Saturday morning. Highs should range from 78 to 83 degrees. Low temperatures Friday night will range from 62 to 71.

The southerly winds will bring humid conditions and the chance of vog until the front arrives.

There’s a 50 percent chance of rain Monday and a 40 percent chance of rain Tuesday. The rainy weather could stick around through Wednesday.

Forecasters caution that there is still some uncertainty about when the cold front will actually move over the islands.
