Hawaii County police are investigating after an officer fired a shot during an incident involving a stolen pickup truck whose driver allegedly drove toward police in Puna.
Officers, who were on Route 11 at 2 p.m. Tuesday attending to an unrelated matter, tried to stop the driver of the vehicle heading south on Route 11 just south of the Kulani Road intersection in Mountain View.
The truck "sped towards the officers in a threatening manner," police said in a news release.
An officer fired a single shot in response toward the pickup truck, which continued south on Route 11 toward the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, police said.
Police are asking for help in locating the stolen vehicle, which is described as a 1989 black Nissan "hardbody" single-cab pickup truck, license plate number ZBC-027.
The truck has slightly lifted oversize tires, with a mesh-type tailgate and a red, yellow and green sticker on the driver’s side rear window.
Anyone with information on the vehicle or the identity of the suspects is asked to call the police non-emergency line at 935-3311.
Anonymous tipsters may call CrimeStoppers at 961-8300.
Police will conduct a criminal investigation into the shooting and the Office of Professional Standards will conduct an administrative investigation, as is standard practice in any officer-involved shooting.
