A lieutenant colonel in charge of a Marine helicopter squadron at Kane­ohe Bay has been removed from the job due to a "loss of confidence" in his ability to continue in command, the Marine Corps said Monday.

Lt. Col. Jay E. Moorman had been in command of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 since May 1.

Moorman was relieved of duty, effective Monday, by Brig. Gen. Steven R. Rudder, commander of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force.

No other information was provided by the Marines. Moorman could not be immediately reached for comment.

HMLA-367, known as "Scarface," was established in Hawaii in September 2012.

As of a year ago, a full complement of Super Cobra attack helicopters — 14 — was on the Kane­ohe Bay base as part of the squadron, along with seven of nine expected Huey transport choppers and 350 unit personnel.

Moorman was a Cobra pilot and instructor who served three times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to his biography.
