A week after a tough loss, Campbell focused on bouncing back.
Unity Kea Cambra’s big plays demonstrated that for the Sabers (5-1, 5-1 OIA Blue).
Cambra returned two interceptions for touchdowns to help No. 8 Campbell beat host Aiea 23-0 in an OIA Blue Division game on Saturday.
"Our coach and chaplain brought up the word ‘resilience,’ " Cambra said. "It had a really huge deal in our win today. I feel a lot of that has brought us back. A minor setback (can lead) to a comeback."
The Sabers lost 57-28 to Mililani on Sept. 19.
Noah Taiese finished with three interceptions for Aiea (2-4, 2-4), all of them coming in the first half against Campbell quarterback Ezra Savea. Na Alii have lost their last four.
Cambra’s 24-yard interception return put Campbell up 6-0 in the first quarter. In the third quarter, Cambra intercepted Kobe Kato from nearly the same spot and returned it for another touchdown to put the Sabers up 23-0 with 3:58 remaining.
"I just happen to be at the right spot at the right time," Cambra said. "It came my way. I countered on it and came out with the touchdowns."
Cambra’s two scores provided a big boost to a Campbell offense that didn’t gain much ground against Aiea. Savea completed just six of 15 passes for 45 yards. Austin May rushed for 82 yards.
"Our missed assignments and missed alignments, Aiea played a great game," Cambra said. "There were some plays that we missed on, but we corrected it and fixed it."
Campbell’s Abiel Taito faked a punt with a less than a minute left in the second quarter, and carried the ball to the Aiea 16. This set up Bryson Maximo’s 33-yard field goal that gave Campbell a 17-0 halftime lead.
Both teams have one more regular-season game left before the OIA playoffs.
"We got to keep fighting through," Aiea’s Taiese said. "We know we’re in the playoffs, but we got to get this last win."
Cambra said the Sabers are improving as the playoffs loom ahead.
"Going into the playoffs, we need to work on our execution, our alignments and our assignments," Cambra said. "We’re progressing each day. A victory today is really good. We need to come together as one going into the playoffs."
