Saints outrun Kamehameha

Battle-tested and experienced in shootouts, No. 8 Saint Louis has recovered from its early-season struggles.

The Crusaders got their first statement win in Cal Lee’s first year back as Saint Louis’ head coach, knocking off No. 4 Kamehameha 46-38 in a dogfight on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw for 397 yards and four touchdowns and added another 172 yards on the ground for the Crusaders (3-3, 3-1 ILH), who have won three straight since starting 0-2.

"This was big not only for us, but our coaches as well," said Tagovailoa, a sophomore. "We’ve been executing things a lot more in practice and conditioning-wise we were a lot better preparing for Kamehameha."

The Crusaders racked up 757 total yards and had two 100-yard rushers — Tagovailoa and Jahred Silofau, who carried the ball 20 times for 152 yards and two scores. His 3-yard run midway through the fourth quarter was the difference as Saint Louis ran clock in the fourth quarter behind its run game.

"Fourth quarter I just wanted to keep the ball. I didn’t want to let it get stripped," Siofau said. "Two years in a row we hadn’t beat them.

"This was something we wanted."

Kamehameha lost for the first time this season despite rolling up 534 total yards of its own.

Quarterback Noah Sua-Godinet was 14-for-30 for 264 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 121 yards and two more scores.

He was also intercepted twice, including once in the fourth quarter by Matthew Mariota that made it difficult for the Warriors to come back.

Saint Louis lost one of its top weapons when receiver Allan Cui was ejected for targeting after laying a huge block on Kamehameha defensive back Dylan Kane.

Kane, who has committed to Oregon, was playing in his first game of the season after recovering from an arm injury and didn’t return.

The game started fast and furious as both teams raced up and down the field to combine for 509 total yards in the first quarter alone.

Six touchdowns were scored in the first 11 minutes as Sua-Godinet and Tagovailoa took turns scorching the opposing defenses.

With the score tied 20-20 early in the second quarter, Kamehameha called a timeout with Saint Louis on the Warriors 14 as head coach Doug Cosbie rallied his players.

Kamehameha immediately started sending pressure and it forced Tagovailoa into three incomplete passes in a row as Saint Louis finally came up empty on a drive.

Sua-Godinet gave Kamehameha its first lead on his second touchdown run, a 14-yarder to make it 27-20 with 8:49 remaining in the half.

Kamehameha didn’t score again as Saint Louis rallied with two touchdowns to take a 33-27 halftime lead.

Tagovailoa hit Drew Kobayashi with a 21-yard touchdown strike to tie the score. After a Kamehameha three-and-out, the Crusaders went 87 yards in two plays as Tagovailoa found Riccardo Sallas II for 62 yards and then threw a perfect fade to Jimmy Nunuha in the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown.

Tagovailoa was 20-for-25 for 359 yards and four touchdowns at the break as the two combined for 825 yards in the first half.

Saint Louis had one last chance to score with a second left, but Tagovailoa was sacked by BYU commit Mika Taufa, who had two in the game.

Jordan Bayudan scored Kamehameha’s first touchdown on an 82-yard run and totaled 144 rushing yards on 11 carries.

‘Iolani 62, Pac-Five 19

KJ Pascua rushed for a career-high 190 yards and five touchdowns and the Raiders set a school record with 62 points to break the previous mark set in a 57-49 win over Damien on Nov. 4, 2005.

Quarterback Austin Jim On completed 12 of 20 passes for 158 yards, with touchdown passes of 10 yards to Keoni-Kordell Makekau and 25 to Connor Ohira as the Raiders extended their winning streak against the Wolf Pack to 13 games dating back to 2007.

‘Iolani (3-1, 2-1), which took over sole possession of first place in ILH Division II, scored three touchdowns in the final 3:31 of the second quarter to lead 48-6 at halftime.

Senior linebacker Corbin Morisada, who already had two sacks, intercepted Pac-Five quarterback Kainoa Ferreira to set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Pascua.

The Wolf Pack (2-2, 1-2) fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Ryan Yoshioka recovered it for ‘Iolani to set up Pascua’s fourth score.

Storm Lotomau added 122 rushing yards and two touchdowns as ‘Iolani had two players go over 100 yards rushing in the same ILH game for the first time since Justin Yamamoto and Ryan Dung accomplished the feat in 2006 against Damien.

Ferreira finished 21-for-38 for 291 yards and two touchdowns. Jarrod Infante had nine receptions for 150 yards and senior Tsubasa Brennan, the ILH’s leading receiver, finished with eight catches for 73 yards.

Dallas Labanon threw for four touchdowns and 118 yards to lead the Monarchs over the Saints.
