The University of Hawaii at Manoa slipped 10 spots on U.S. News & World Report’s ranking of top public and private research schools offering undergraduate and graduate programs.

The University of Hawaii system’s flagship campus ranked No. 168 out of 201 schools on the 2015 Best National Universities list, released Monday evening in Hawaii. UH-Manoa is the only Hawaii school on the main Best Colleges list.

Universities are scored on more than a dozen measures of quality, including graduation and retention rates, peer assessments, acceptance rates, average class sizes and alumni giving.

Overall, UH-Manoa received 29 points out of 100 possible points, down from the 36 points it earned last year, when it ranked No. 158 out of 201.

Princeton University topped the Best National Universities list, followed by Harvard University (No. 2) and Yale University (No. 3).

Meanwhile, Hawaii Pacific University, the state’s largest private university, fell nine spots to rank 80th out of 90 schools on the list of Best Regional Universities – West.

The list covers public and private universities offering undergraduate and master’s degree programs, but few if any doctorate programs. Schools are rated against peer groups in North, South, Midwest and West regions.

While HPU dropped several spots on the list, its overall score fell by just one point from last year to 28 points out of 100 possible.

Trinity University of Texas topped the West region list, followed by Santa Clara University in California.

HPU also appears on the list of Best Colleges for Veterans, coming in 27th out of 29 schools nationwide, down from No. 19 last year.

The rankings consider schools that participate in federal initiatives that help veterans and active service members apply, pay for and complete degrees.

Brigham Young University-Hawaii moved up two spots to No. 16 out of 25 on the list of Best Regional Colleges-West. The Laie school earned 63 points out of 100, tying with Northwest University in Washington.

The list of regional colleges looks at schools focusing mostly on undergraduate liberal arts programs.
