OIA Friday football games will kickoff earlier
Oahu Interscholastic Association football start times will be a half-hour earlier on Friday nights, starting on Sept. 12, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
The matter was discussed at the OIA office at Radford High School on Tuesday during the monthly athletic directors’ meeting.
So far this season, the Friday game times have been 6 p.m. for junior varsity, with varsity to follow. With this change, the JV games on Friday will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The change is not effective for this Friday’s games, which will have 6 p.m. JV starts.
In years past, Friday JV games were scheduled to start at 5 p.m., but due to a problem with bus scheduling this season, the start time was moved to 6.
According to several athletic directors, the later start time caused later finishing times and that was not an ideal situation for student-athletes, their families and fans.

Last Friday, the Leilehua at Waianae game didn’t finish until close to midnight.
The change will also affect OIA volleyball, which begins this week with 6 p.m. weekday start times. Starting Monday, Sept. 8, the start times will switch to 5:30 p.m.
