Oracle sues over health exchange
SALEM, Ore. » Oracle Corp. has sued the state of Oregon in a fight over the state’s health insurance exchange, saying government officials are using the technology company’s software despite $23 million in disputed bills.
Oracle’s breach-of-contract lawsuit against Cover Oregon was filed Friday in federal court in Portland. It alleges that state officials repeatedly promised to pay the company but have not done so. The lawsuit seeks payment of the disputed $23 million plus interest, along with other unspecified damages.
The CEO and co-founder of Oracle is Larry Ellison, who owns 98 percent of Lanai as well as local carrier Island Air.
Malaysia Air delisted in overhaul
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia » Malaysia’s state investment company said Friday it plans to make Malaysia Airlines fully government owned, removing it from the country’s stock exchange before carrying out an overhaul of the carrier that is reeling from double disasters.
Khazanah Nasional, which owns 69 percent of Malaysia Airlines, said it has proposed to the carrier’s board that it buy out minority shareholders at 8 cents a share, which is 29 percent higher than the airline’s average share price over the previous three months. The takeover would cost $429 million.
McDonald’s global sales decline
NEW YORK » McDonald’s said Friday that a global sales figure fell 2.5 percent in July, dragged down by persistent weakness in the U.S. and a food safety scare in China.
The world’s biggest hamburger chain said that the decline included a 3.2 percent drop in the U.S. and a 7.3 percent drop in the unit encompassing Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
California home cost high, energy low
SAN DIEGO » California consumers rank among the nation’s biggest spenders on housing and the lowest spenders on energy, according to new government data.
Per-capita spending on housing and utilities totaled $8,650 in 2012, which is sixth highest in the country and well above the national average of $6,415. California was surpassed only by the District of Columbia at $11,985, Hawaii at $10,002, Connecticut at $9,524, Maryland at $9,000 and New Jersey at $8,861.
That’s no surprise in a state with many of the most expensive housing markets. California occupied four of the top five slots in a National Association of Realtors survey of single-family home sale prices in the first three months of this year, led by San Jose and San Francisco, and followed by Anaheim-Santa Ana and San Diego.
