Firefighters find body of missing hiker swept down Kauai stream
Kauai firefighters recovered the body Saturday of a woman believed to be a missing hiker swept down Hanakoa Stream a day earlier.
The woman’s body was found around 11:30 a.m. near the Hanakoa shoreline and was airlifted out of the area, Kauai officials said.
Her identity has not yet been released.
She was camping with her friend, a 24-year-old man, in the Kalalau Valley Friday when they attempted to cross the Hanakoa Stream and were swept downstream, officials said.
The man was able to make it to shore but could not find the woman, authorities said. He hiked out of the valley to call for assistance, they said.
Firefighters and Air 1 rescue crews searched for the woman until about 6:30 p.m. but suspended the efforts due to darkness.They resumed searching Saturday morning.
