Moanalua High School graduate Eimi Koga won her first-round match Wednesday at the U.S. Women’s Amateur, in Glen Cove, N.Y.
Koga defeated Columbia’s Alejandra Cangrejo, 2 up. The University of Washington sophomore never trailed, winning four of the first eight holes.
She plays Jing Yan of China in Thursday’s second round. Koga tied for 33rd in qualifying with rounds of 71-74 at the par-70 course. Kailua’s Malia Nam (72-76) did not survive an eight-way playoff for the final three spots to advance to match play.
Honolulu’s Cyd Okino (76-73) was a shot behind Nam, as was Annie Park, the 2013 NCAA champion from nearby Levittown.
Army Invitational tees off
With all eyes on the weather, state high school champ John Oda, state stroke-play champ Kyle Suppa and eight-time Army Invitational champion Brandan Kop are in a field of some 175 teeing off this weekend in the Army Invitational.
The tournament starts at approximately 6 a.m. Thursday and Friday at Leilehua Golf Course. A cut comes after Friday’s second round and the final round is Saturday.
Others in the field include Manoa Cup winner Nainoa Calip, Barbers Point champion Corey Kozuma, recent USF graduate Alika Bell and SJ Maeng.
Huang ties for 11th
‘Iolani senior Rose Huang tied for 11th at the 39th Junior PGA Championship, which ended Friday at Miramont Country Club in Bryan, Texas.
