Homeless man indicted in Chinatown beating death

An Oahu grand jury Tuesday indicted a 35-year-old man for allegedly beating and killing a 57-year-old homeless man in Chinatown last month.

Michael Abella, who also is homeless, was indicted on second-degree murder. His bail was set at $200,000.

Police said Abella attacked Shelton Higa twice on July 17 in Chinatown.

After the beatings, Higa was taken to the hospital and died 12 days later of brain injuries after being taken off life support systems.
