Local juniors do well at Callaway
Hawaii had three top-five finishes at last week’s Callaway Junior World Championships, played in and around San Diego.
Honolulu’s Minny Byun had the highest finish, tying for third in the Girls 9-10 Division. Byun closed with a 2-over-par 58 at Lomas Santa Fe Exec Golf Course to finish at 175, 12 strokes out of first.
Honolulu’s Go Nakatsukasa took fourth in the Boys 9-10, at 61–184. Moxiao Xia was fifth in Boys 7-8, with a score of 64–187.
Hawaii had two top-20 finishers in Girls 13-14s. Miki Manta (71–215) was 13th and Malia Nam (73–216) 14th.
Char earns a top 5 in Florida tourney
Waianae’s Lorraine Char closed with a 1-under-par 71 to tie for fourth in the Girls 13-14 division at the 20th Optimist International Junior Championships on Wednesday.
The tournament is played in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The younger age divisions finished on Wednesday. The Boys 16-18s and Girls 15-18s tee off on Saturday.
Char finished 18 shots out of first place, captured by Sa Langkulgasettri of Thailand. Reese Guzman, from Kahului, tied for 16th at 78–238.
Go Nakatsukasa (75–234) took eighth in Boys 10-11s, while Honolulu’s Remington Hirano (75–218) tied for 11th in 14-15s.
